One Nation or one nation
We congratulate Pauline Hanson, Barnaby Joyce and their team at One Nation. The people have voted and chosen them. That is a great position to be in and much to be admired. The One Nation victory sends a message that when the voters get annoyed enough they will stop voting for the parties they have always voted for an instead voter for someone promising something new. Pauline Hanson and One Nation have been around for a long time. Sometimes it takes something different to open the door to others. Australia today is very different to what it was a quarter of a century ago and facing very different issues. Time will tell how the results deliver.
Fair Go!
It is hard to see Australia as “one nation” unless we come up with one particular virtue we all admire. For me it would be fairness for everyone. I like the national Anthem, Advance Australia Fair, because it seems to me that everyone deserves a fair go.
The Swagman
I also like the alternative which almost became our National Anthem, Waltzing Matilda. The story of the poor, homeless man, as so many were, carrying his sleeping bag & tent equivalent on his back and walking the road of outback Australia, taking whatever work he could get and begging for food in return.
Generous Aussies
My grandfather went from Sydney to Roma by ship and train for a station job, but when he turned up at the pub there was a message saying the job had been taken. The publican’s wife said “That’s okay you can stay here and fix us up when you get a job.” How kind was that? He became a young drover on the Gulf of Carpentaria in Far North Queensland surviving on the fish he caught and a bit of beef. When he became ill, he was looked after at a bush hospital by a motherly matron. Aussie generosity.
The Squatters and Police
When the swagman outback needed food, he killed a sheep. But there would be no mercy from the squatters who had received the land for free and owned the sheep. They would have had him locked up or worse. He obviously feared the worst and decided suicide was his best option.
Politics
A good few Aussie give politics a good clearance . but it is really “Party Politics” they don’t like. Politics is the art of managing the affairs of the people. The great thing about democracy is that unlike the Swagman, we have nothing to fear from democracy and everything to gain. We elect the Parliaments to represent us, to govern for our benefit. Why don’t they? Because most of us never tell the parliament what we want of ask for it. We just complain about how bad it is.
How could they know?
How could our parliaments know what we 28 million Aussies want them to do? They cannot possibly do that. Nor can they please all 28 million of us on every topic of interest. Nobody could. They will please those who tell them what they want in the right way and ask them to provide it. Aussies using Votergrams have proved that over and over again. That is the best the parliament can do.
